Texas BESS: Wärtsilä to supply 500 MWh project; Linea Energy secures financing for 470 MWh facility
Colorado-based Peregrine Energy Solutions partnered with Helsinki-headquartered integrated BESS services provider Wärtsilä to advance the development of its 250 MW/500 MWh Mallard BESS project located northeast of Dallas, Texas.
Mallard has already commenced construction, and Peregrine Energy Solutions is working with Wärtsilä to use company’s Quantum2 energy storage system, which was launched in March 2024.
This is Peregrine’s second collaboration on utility-scale energy storage deployment with Wärtsilä, following the 150 MW/300 MWh Wizard Energy Storage Project under construction in League City, Texas.
Once operational, Mallard will provide flexibility and resilience to Texas’ ERCOT grid, and it will be a key project for Peregrine’s Texas expansion plan. In addition to its Wärtsilä partnership, the company has entered a tolling agreement with an unnamed Fortune 500 company for an undisclosed amount for Mallard. North America-focused WHC Energy Services will also come on board as an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) provider to facilitate Mallard’s construction.
According to its website, Peregrine has executed more than 50 GWs of renewable energy and energy storage facilities across North American energy markets. In October, it secured $130 million in new capital from investors including the Ministry of Environment of South Korea to advance its United States BESS portfolio.
A month later, in November, Peregrine closed a preferred equity agreement with Bildmore Clean Energy for a BESS project that was already under construction. Peregrine has originated and developed a pipeline of 15 GWh of storage across the United States.
The company’s Quantum2 system is a fully-integrated high-capacity system designed for large-scale deployment. It uses Wärtsilä’s GEMS Digital Energy Management Platform to monitor, control and optimize the BESS system and is compliant with ISO standards for 20-foot containers. Safety is a big focus for Wärtsilä, and its Quantum2 system is fully compliant with international safety standards, including NFPA 855. It features fully tested pre-installed liquid-cooled IP67 modules, requiring no additional site work and providing additional safety. Quantum2 successfully passed several control systems tests in September 2025.Meanwhile, ESS News reported that the company’s Quantum3 energy storage system passed three major fire safety and explosion tests in November.
Wärtsilä has deployed and contracted more than 19 GWh of energy storage worldwide. This year’s pv magazine Awards jurors in the Energy Storage category named Wärtsilä’s Blackhillock BESS in Scotland as the overall winner.
Duffy BESS debt financing
Also in Texas, Californian independent power producer and developer Linea Energy has closed project debt financing for its 235 MW/470 MWh standalone BESS – the Duffy BESS – in Matagorda County.
Financing for the Duffy project comprises a construction-to-term loan, tax equity bridge loan, and a letter of credit facility. Norddeutsche Landesbank Girozentrale (Nord/Lb) served as coordinating lead arranger and Societe Generale and SMBC acted as joint lead arrangers.
“We are thrilled to announce the closing of debt financing that will facilitate completing construction on the Duffy BESS project,” said Cassidy DeLine, CEO of Linea Energy. “We are grateful for the financial commitment of our lender partners whose support enables us to advance critical battery energy storage infrastructure in the Lone Star State.”
“The Duffy BESS project represents an important milestone in our mission to strengthen the resilience of the grid that powers Texas homes and businesses,” added the executive of Linea, which refers to itself as a “newly-formed independent power producer aiming to change the status quo of how clean energy is developed and financed to rapidly increase the speed of deployment.”
The company’s activities are supported by EnCap’s Energy Transition team, which is the renewables division of EnCap Investments L.P., a provider of growth capital to the independent energy sector in the United States.
