Trina Storage and Aer Soléir launch largest BESS project in Italy
Trina Storage has signed its first large-scale battery energy storage project in Italy with Aer Soléir, an Irish company based in Dublin. This project, located in the Turin area, won the Italian Capacity Market auction for deliveries scheduled for 2027.
“The strategically important project will have a power output of 250 MW and a capacity of 1,000 MWh (1 GWh) and will be located in Rondissone. With its 1 GWh, the project is destined to become one of the largest battery storage systems in Italy and Europe,” wrote Trina Solar’s energy storage business unit.
Technical features
Rondissone represents the “first start of construction” of Trina Storage’s Italian portfolio.
Trina Storage will supply, deliver, and commission its next-generation Elementa 2 Pro storage system, integrated with power conversion systems (PCS), medium voltage skids, and a Power Plant Controller (PPC), ensuring grid-forming functionality. Specifically, the 1 GWh system will be built using 228 Elementa 2 Pro storage cabinets and 36 integrated PCS & MV skid units.
Trina Storage reports that it is already preparing further projects to be implemented under the Macse mechanism.
Italy: one of the three markets in Europe
Last year, Gabriele Buccini, Head of Utility Storage at Trina Solar, told pv magazine Italia that Italy would be one of its three main markets in Europe.
“While we do not disclose market-specific shipment forecasts, we can confirm a significant pipeline of utility-scale projects for 2026-2027, with growing demand for 4-hour and even 8-hour BESS systems. We expect Italy to be among our top three markets in Europe going forward,” Buccini said .
The Rondissone project
Aer Soléir is a company specializing in the development, construction, and operation of multi-technology renewable energy projects, with a focus on wind, solar, and utility-scale energy storage systems.
As part of the contract, Trina Storage will also provide a 20-year long-term service agreement (LTSA), which includes preventative and corrective maintenance, spare parts management, 24/7 remote support, extended product warranties, and performance and availability guarantees to protect the system’s long-term performance.
