Fu-Gen and Nala Renewables close on 125 MW ready-to-build BESS in Finland

Swiss developer and independent power producer (IPP) Fu-Gen has closed on a 125 MW BESS in Vuolijoki, central Finland, with London-based IPP and developer Nala Renewables.

Although headquartered in Zurich, Switzerland, Fu-Gen’s main market is the Nordics. It partnered with Nala Renewables in October 2025 to develop a ready-to-build BESS portfolio in Finland.

The Vuolijoki standalone BESS is ready-to-build and its close is the first transaction as part of the partnership between Nala and Fu-Gen. Construction at the Vuolijoki battery is due to begin later this year.

Nala Renewables was founded in 2020, and it aims to have a 10 GW renewable energy project portfolio by 2030. Last January, it acquired the 50 MW Kauhava BESS from Fu-Gen to add to its Finnish portfolio.

 To date, it has around 3 GW of cumulative capacity across its entire operational, in-construction, and development portfolio. The company is a 50/50 joint venture between Trafigura and funds managed by IFM Investors. As well as Finland, it has projects in the United States, Chile, Europe, Vietnam and the Phillipines.

Nordics-focused Fu-Gen has several small batteries under 20 MW in Finland, and the 125 MW Sandås battery in development. Last August, it developed a 20 MWh BESS project in Finland’s Härryda Municipality which it sold to renewable energy company Monsson.
