Canadian province procures 640 MW of eight-hour battery storage
Ontario has procured 640 MW of eight-hour battery storage through its Long-Term 2 Capacity Window 1 procurement, according to the Canadian Renewable Energy Association (CanREA), which said three projects were selected, all featuring 50% Indigenous equity ownership.
The contracts were awarded through the LT2 Capacity Window 1 procurement, administered by the Independent Electricity System Operator. CanREA said its members are represented across all three projects, including Atura, Neoen, and Six Nations Group.
Ontario has now procured approximately 3.6 GW of utility-scale battery storage in total, according to CanREA, which said the province’s electricity demand is expected to rise significantly as electrification accelerates and industrial load grows.
“As home to Canada’s largest battery energy storage projects, other jurisdictions are watching and learning from Ontario. Canada needs more wind, solar and energy storage to power our future, and I would like to congratulate all successful proponents moving these important projects forward,” said Vittoria Bellissimo, president and CEO of CanREA.
Ontario has been building out its storage pipeline rapidly. The province reached financial close on a 1.2 GWh battery storage facility in late 2024, and the LT2 Capacity Window 1 result follows an earlier record procurement that established the province as a benchmark market for large-scale storage in North America.
