Engie, Flower sign 126 MW BESS flexibility deal in Germany

Engie and Swedish energy technology company Flower have signed a seven-year flexibility purchase agreement covering 126 MW of battery storage capacity in Germany, with the arrangement set to begin on Jan. 1, 2029.

The companies said the deal, structured as a virtual toll, is designed to facilitate the financing, construction and commercialization of several battery energy storage projects. The initial portfolio includes a 100 MW/400 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) project in Hamburg being developed by Flower, as well as a recently acquired 63 MW/257 MWh project in Döllnitz, Saxony-Anhalt.

Under the agreement, Flower will be responsible for developing and optimizing the battery assets, while Engie will provide energy trading, risk management and portfolio management services. The companies said this division of responsibilities is intended to reduce market and operational risks while improving project economics.

Flower said the agreement marks the launch of a business model combining the expansion of its storage portfolio with long-term commercialization arrangements. Both companies said they would explore additional cooperation opportunities in European flexibility markets.
