Grenergy signs largest battery-backed nighttime PPA in Chile
Spanish renewable energy company Grenergy has signed its largest power purchase agreement (PPA) by contracted volume to date, agreeing to supply 1 TWh of electricity annually for 15 years during non-solar hours to an investment-grade global utility.
The contract will take effect between July and October 2026. Electricity will be supplied from the Elena battery energy storage system in Chile’s Antofagasta region, which has 3.5 GWh of installed storage capacity and is planned to expand to 7 GWh.
Grenergy recently inaugurated Elena, which it describes as the largest battery storage project in the Americas. The project includes 624 battery containers and 6,240 battery units and forms part of the company’s Oasis de Atacama solar-plus-storage platform.
The Oasis de Atacama platform has been expanded to 2.5 GW of solar generation and 14.1 GWh of battery storage under Grenergy’s 2028 plan. The company also plans to develop the 1.4 GW solar, 5.1 GWh storage Oasis Central platform in central Chile and the 1 GW solar, 3.2 GWh storage Iberian Oasis platform in Spain. Together, the three Oasis platforms represent 5 GW of solar capacity and 22 GWh of battery storage.
The new agreement follows other long-term PPAs linked to Grenergy’s hybrid projects in Chile. In June, the company signed a 12-year agreement covering 350 GWh of annual supply from the Algarrobal project, the fifth phase of Oasis de Atacama, which will combine 242 MW of solar generation with 1,412 MWh of battery storage and is scheduled to enter operation in the third quarter of 2027.
Grenergy also signed a 15-year PPA with Chilean copper producer Codelco in 2025 to supply 0.5 TWh of renewable electricity annually from January 2026 through its commercial subsidiary, GR Power Chile. That agreement provides 24/7 electricity supply from a portfolio of hybrid projects, including the 340 MW Monte Águila project with battery energy storage.
Grenergy said its global development pipeline totals 71 GWh of battery storage and 12 GW of solar capacity across Europe, North America, and Latin America.
