Enertrag, SMA start construction of 840 MWh battery in Germany
German renewable energy company Enertrag and inverter manufacturer SMA have started construction of a 200 MW/840 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) at Bertikow in the Uckermark district of Brandenburg, northeastern Germany.
The project is being built directly at the Bertikow grid connection point, a major node in northeastern Germany’s transmission network. It is designed to absorb peaks in wind and solar photovoltaic (PV) generation and provide grid services.
Alongside electricity trading through energy arbitrage, the battery will provide system services, including grid-forming operation, which can help support grid stability.
SMA is supplying the central system technology for grid integration and power conversion. The installation will use 29 SMA Medium Voltage Power Stations (MVPS) 9200. Each compact 40-foot skid-mounted unit will accommodate two Sunny Central Storage UP-S 4600 battery inverters.
The system will also include two redundant SMA Power Plant Managers and the SMA Synchronous Grid Forming Package for the Sunny Central Storage UP-S.
“The Bertikow project is designed to meet demanding grid requirements,” said Julia Zornow, key account manager for storage projects at SMA. She said the grid-forming technology would provide additional flexibility for future grid operation and that projects of this kind would generate important insights for the next generation of large-scale energy storage applications.
The battery is scheduled to enter operation in 2027.
