Eni Storage JV launches permitting for LFP battery factory in Italy

The Seri Industrial business unit and Eni aim to capture more than 10% of the European stationary battery market by creating an integrated manufacturing hub between Brindisi and Teverola.

The Eni Storage Systems joint venture (JV) formed by Eni (which holds 50% plus one share) and Seri Industrial group unit Fib has begun the permitting process for a site that could host a stationary battery storage production plant in Brindisi which the JV is already working on.

With engineering activity underway, Seri told pv magazine Italia it could not provide a date for production of the first batteries from the project.

Eni Storage Systems wants an 8 GWh-per-year fab for lithium iron-phosphate (LFP) batteries which would primarily be used for stationary electricity storage.

“The project is currently in the engineering, economic, financial, and authorization phases,” wrote the JV’s partners in a press release. “These activities are expected to be completed by the first quarter of 2026, and [development] will then move immediately to the executive phase.”

Eni and Fib said Brindisi will be the focus of production for the LFP active cathode material and for the assembly of batteries into battery energy storage systems.

“The cells will also be produced in Brindisi, as is already done in Teverola (currently the only active plant in Europe for the production of LFP cells), in addition to the cathode active material (LFP), which is currently produced only in Asia,” Seri told pv magazine

The JV partners added the Brindisi site would also offer battery recycling.

Seri Industrial and Eni want more than 10% of Europe’s stationary battery market via an integrated production hub between Brindisi and Teverola, in Caserta.
