Beyond the cell: The evolution of battery costs
For years, the battery energy storage (BESS) story has followed a familiar script: costs fall, deployment accelerates, economics improve. Yet with rising costs for battery cells, the opposite might be expected. Paola Perez Peña, senior principal analyst at S&P Global Energy, examines why the latest jump in lithium prices has only had limited impacts on overall BESS costs so far.
US medium duration storage endures woes, while Form’s long duration grows, and lithium overflows

Natron Energy to build gigawatt-scale sodium-ion battery plant in North Carolina
The new planned manufacturing facility will produce 24 GW of Natron’s sodium-ion batteries annually. Natron says its batteries outperform lithium-ion batteries in power density and recharging speed, do not require lithium, cobalt, copper, or nickel, and are non-flammable. The plant will be the first double-digit GW sodium-ion plant in the USA.
