Beyond the cell: The evolution of battery costs
For years, the battery energy storage (BESS) story has followed a familiar script: costs fall, deployment accelerates, economics improve. Yet with rising costs for battery cells, the opposite might be expected. Paola Perez Peña, senior principal analyst at S&P Global Energy, examines why the latest jump in lithium prices has only had limited impacts on overall BESS costs so far.
US medium duration storage endures woes, while Form’s long duration grows, and lithium overflows
U.S. medium and long duration manufacturers EOS and ESS are showing stress, while Form Energy is outpacing projections and now must scale – all while being stalked by lithium’s ever widening use profile.
EU to cover only 21.4% of battery demand by 2030 despite global market surge; costs remain up to 50% higher than Asia
A report from the European Commission's Joint Research Centre (JRC) warns of the urgent need to accelerate battery manufacturing in the European Union to achieve a solid competitive position against powers such as China or the United States.
Australia’s PowerPlus secures grant to triple battery production capability
Australian battery designer and manufacturer PowerPlus Energy has secured $2.3 million in federal government funding that will support its plans to triple annual battery module production capacity to 150 MWh over the next two years.

Demand diligence from US battery integration
Tariffs continue to reshape the US storage market. Rising costs for overseas systems have created new incentives to integrate equipment domestically, and many developers are turning to US firms to assemble battery systems. Integration capacity can scale faster than battery cell manufacturing, but not without risk. Unlike cell plants, where automated processes keep variations in check, battery assembly and integration depends on people, as Jeff Zwijack from Intertek CEA explains.
Sodium nickel chloride battery factory proposed for New Mexico
North America’s Desert Mountain Energy Corporation has signed a non-binding letter of intent to form a joint venture to build and operate a sodium-nickel-chloride (SNC) battery manufacturing plant in Roswell, New Mexico. As per the proposal, the facility would use produced water from oil and gas wells as part of a cooling and processing system intended to support battery production as well as a data center complex.
