Greece: 12 GW+ of merchant batteries wait for the green light as curtailments escalate
Investors have submitted applications for 12.15 GW of utility-scale, standalone merchant battery storage projects in Greece, far exceeding the 4.7 GW the country plans to approve. But with wrestling over financing and key policy details still unresolved, the path to construction remains unclear.
Ukraine prioritizes solar-plus-storage in renewables auctions
Newly-implemented rules governing Ukraine’s energy market introduce solar-plus-storage systems as a separate auction category, ease regulatory barriers governing standalone storage projects and establish processes for renewable energy facilities located in Ukraine’s occupied territories.
“MACSE price levels were driven by bearish battery cost expectations. The market reality today is very different.”
“You can’t work miracles, so the problem remains — there will certainly be an impact for everyone,” Gabriele Buccini, head of Utility Storage at Trina Solar, told pv magazine Italia, referring to market volatility and the risks facing BESS manufacturers, which are now operating in a very different market environment than just six months ago.
Batteries awarded 1.22 GW in UK capacity market auction for 2029 delivery
Provisional results show more than 100 battery energy storage systems (BESS) awarded capacity market contracts in latest T-4 auction for Great Britain’s energy grid, with the vast majority of BESS contracts awarded to new-build capacity.

China scraps energy storage mandate for renewable energy plants
In a major policy shift towards electricity market liberalization, China has introduced contract for difference (CfD) auctions for renewable energy plants and removed the energy storage mandate, which has driven up to 75% of the nation's demand to date. S&P Global expects the move to reverberate throughout the global battery energy storage supply chain, further driving down prices that are already at historically low levels.
Philippines issues terms for renewables auction with storage
Pairing solar plants with battery energy storage systems (BESS) will be the main strategic focus for the country's upcoming renewable energy auction. Each project must have a minimum storage duration of four hours to ensure sufficient grid support and energy reliability.
UK T-4 auction paves the way to nearly 7 GW of new BESS capacity by 2028
Out of the 6.9 GW of battery energy storage systems (BESS) prequalified, which translates into 1.9 GW derated capacity, around 1.8 GW of derated BESS secured 15-year contracts in the UK's T-4 auction. This is nearly two time more than the volume procured last year. Only a week earlier, a record for BESS procurement was also set in the T-1 procurement.
