AES seeks green light for 5.3 GWh battery in Chile

AES Andes, a subsidiary of US multinational AES Corporation, is seeking approval for a solar- battery energy storage complex Altos del Sol, in the Antofagasta region, which will require an investment of $1.375 billion.
The project involves the construction, operation and decomissioning of a solar power plant with a capacity of 763.6 MW coupled with a five-hour battery energy storage systems (BESS) with a power output of 1063.4 MW and storage capacity of 5317 MWh.
In addition, the project comprises an electrical substation and two 220 kV high voltage lines, which would connect to the Monte Mina substation, from where the power will be injected into the National Electric System.
The Project will be developed in the Antofagasta Region, northern Chile, approximately 177 km southeast of the city of Antofagasta.
If development is approved, the company estimates that construction would begin in April 2025 and be completed in 2027, with production commencing in early 2028.
AES Andes recently obtained an environmental approval for the Cristales project, a 340 MW photovoltaic project paired with 542 MW/2710 MWh BESS, also in Antofagasta.
