Sungrow highlights Italian energy storage potential
pv magazine Italia was present at the Power Up Your Future event recently organized by Sungrow to highlight the challenges and solutions associated with the implementation of BESS in Italy, in support of the country’s commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.
pv magazine: What are your latest innovations in BESS?
Emilio Manzoni: Sungrow has recently introduced several key innovations in battery energy storage systems (BESS), significantly improving sustainability and efficiency in the energy landscape. One of our key innovations is PowerTitan 2.0, which uses liquid cooling technology to maintain optimal system temperature, improving efficiency and extending system life. This technology not only minimizes energy losses but also improves reliability, making it ideal for large-scale applications. By improving grid-forming capabilities, PowerTitan 2.0 contributes to grid stability, especially in balancing intermittent [-generating] renewable [energy] sources such as solar and wind, which are critical to a sustainable energy transition.
How do they help make the energy system more sustainable?
We prioritize modularity and scalability in our designs, such as the PowerTitan 2.0, but also with the PowerStack 200CS, a solution for commercial, industrial, and utility-scale projects. These systems optimize energy use, increase energy savings, and reduce companies’ carbon footprint by enabling the integration of more renewable energy into the grid. Both solutions reflect our commitment to developing more efficient, flexible, and environmentally friendly energy systems. These innovations are aligned with global sustainability goals and help reduce dependence on fossil fuels, moving towards a zero-emission future.
With the growing demand for renewable energy and the need for large-scale integration, how is Sungrow positioned to meet the needs of different markets?
Sungrow is strategically positioned to meet the growing demand for renewable energy in different markets by offering a versatile portfolio of battery energy storage systems that can be adapted to a wide range of applications, from residential and commercial and industrial solutions to utility-scale projects. Our solutions, such as the PowerTitan 2.0 and PowerStack 200CS, are designed with scalability and flexibility in mind, ensuring they can meet the specific energy storage needs of different regions and industries. For markets with high renewables penetration, our technologies support the integration of intermittent [-generation] sources such as solar and wind, helping to stabilize the grid and ensure a reliable energy supply. In emerging markets, we provide robust and efficient solutions that enable sustainable growth while contributing to energy security.
What is your vision for the future of energy storage technology?
It focuses on innovation, efficiency, safety, and sustainability. We see energy storage technologies playing a central role in grid resilience and decarbonization efforts, enabling more renewable energy to be integrated into energy systems and reducing dependence on fossil fuels. By continuing to advance our storage technologies, Sungrow aims to be a driving force in accelerating the global energy transition and helping achieve carbon neutrality.
What are the specific goals for the Italian market?
Sungrow sees significant potential in the Italian market for the development of new energy storage systems, driven by the country’s ambitious renewable energy goals and its ongoing transition to a more sustainable energy system. Italy aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, with interim targets of reaching 30% renewables in total energy consumption and 55% in electricity generation, by 2030. These goals create vast opportunities for the deployment of battery energy storage systems (BESS) to support grid stability and the integration of renewable energy sources such as solar and wind. As mentioned during our event, we see the Italian market as the one with the greatest potential for the deployment of new ESS [energy storage system] projects in Europe in the coming years. Our goals are to support this expansion of renewable energy projects by providing advanced ESS technologies and high-level services to our partners. We have the technology, capacity, and expertise to fully support this development and Sungrow is committed to supporting Italy’s ambitious renewable energy goals by improving grid reliability and promoting sustainability.
Can you provide a case study that illustrates where your bar is set?
With nearly 20 years of experience in energy storage systems, Sungrow solutions have powered a number of landmark projects across the globe. These include, among others, the world’s largest energy storage project (a 7.8 GWh energy storage project in Saudi Arabia), the largest standalone energy storage facility in Latin America (the 200 MW/880 MWh BESS del Desierto project, in Chile), as well as a number of impressive ongoing BESS projects in Europe, such as the 800 MWh Vilvoorde BESS project in Belgium, the 331 MWh Bramley [site] in the UK, and a 230 MWh project in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. These projects demonstrate the scalability and advanced technology behind Sungrow’s BESS solutions but also reflect the company’s commitment to enabling a sustainable future through innovation, helping countries scale up their renewable energy capabilities while ensuring grid stability and efficiency.
