Honduras awards 300 MWh battery storage project

The National Electric Power Company (ENEE) has selected a Chinese-Honduran consortium to design, supply, install, test, and commission a grid-connected battery energy storage system (BESS) at the Amarateca substation in the department of Francisco Morazán.

Honduran state-owned utility ENEE has awarded the contract to supply a grid-connected 75 MW/300 MWh BESS to Chinese state-backed wind company Windey and local business Equipos Industriales.

The BESS, to be connected to the Honduran grid at the Amarateca substation, in the Francisco Morazán department, is set to begin construction in April.

The consortium’s HNL 1.3 billion ($50.2 million) offer beat five other bidders in September’s tender. Empresa Electric Solar offered to build the project for $87.3 million; Representaciones Mecánico Eléctricas offered $76.8 million; the Amarateca consortium of Chinese state-owned Sinohydro and US-based Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories bid $74.1 million; and a consortium named Amergy offered $98.6 million.

ENEE said the battery, set to be operational this year, will be “the one with the largest installed energy storage capacity in the region.”

Honduras generates 10% to 12% of its electricity from its 530 MW of solar generation capacity.
