Transelec, Chile’s leading electricity transmission company, has announced the start of construction on its first energy storage contract.

The grid-connected 105 MW/420 MWh BESS will be installed at the 123 MWp Granja Solar project owned by forestry and fuel company Copec and will help reduce a rate of curtailment of excess solar electricity which has risen 22% in Chile since 2021.

The BESS, which is due online before April, will connect to the Granja Solar substation via a 33 kV transmission line, and to Transelec’s Lagunas substation via an existing 220 kV line.

The contract for the BESS, signed in July, stipulates Transelec will build, own, and operate the site for 20 years before transferring ownership to Copec, which acquired Granja Solar in April 2024.

The BESS will enable the injection of enough electricity from the solar-plus-storage site to power more than 60,000 homes.

Transelec announced, in August, it had purchased the batteries and power conversion equipment for the BESS from China’s Clou Electronics. A statement said Clou would supply “more than 130 20-foot (6 m) modules, each containing thousands of … battery cells.”
