Green Flexibility commissions grid-neutral battery storage project in Germany

The 15 MW/33 MWh storage facility in Immenstadt is the largest of its kind in Bavaria. ‘Grid-neutral’ operation of the battery has been agreed with the network operator Allgäu Netz to avoid placing additional strain on the regional electricity distribution system.

Green Flexibility and Allgäuer Überlandwerk have connected what they decribe as the largest battery storage facility in Bavaria to the grid. The facility, in Immenstadt, has an output of 15 MW and a capacity of 33 MWh. According to Green Flexibility, the investment was €15 million ($17.6 million).

The work on installing the battery storage system was completed even faster than planned, the company added. All technical interfaces were successfully installed, comprehensively tested, and commissioned without any problems.

In this project, Green Flexibility implemented its recently introduced “Regiolink” concept for the first time. This concept envisions the storage systems not only responding to market prices but also actively contributing to regional grid stability. Grid-neutral operation of the battery storage system was agreed upon with distribution grid operator Allgäu Netz. This will be specifically adapted to local requirements to avoid placing additional strain on the network.

On July 2, Green Flexibility announced the construction of a 10 MW/25 MWh battery storage facility in Walkertshofen, Swabia, in the Augsburg district. The investment, in that case, was €10 million. According to Green Flexibility, construction is scheduled to begin early next year. Commissioning is expected in the second quarter of 2026. That battery storage facility will also be able to operate off-grid.
