462 storage projects totaling 7,614 MW are being processed in Spain
Last week, Valladolid hosted AEPIBAL Day 2025, the annual meeting organized by the Spanish association for battery energy storage, AEPIBAL.
In one of the presentations, a spokesperson for Red Eléctrica (REE) stated that there are currently 21 GW of hybridization projects with permits (although she added that a large portion will not be implemented), 11 GW of stand-alone storage, and 340 GW in the commissioning queue.
However, according to data collected by the official bulletins of all provinces, as well as the Official State Gazette (BOE) , at this time a total of 462 projects have started their administrative processing, adding up to 7,614 MW of power in Spain.
Of the total, 47% are hybrid installations with renewable generation and 53% are stand-alone projects. The average power output of the projects is 18 MW and the average capacity is 3.2 hours.
Regarding regulatory progress, 483 MW already have Administrative Construction Authorization, while 2,644 MW have received a favorable Environmental Impact Statement, demonstrating that a significant portion of the pipeline is moving towards the execution phases. The regional analysis shows that Extremadura leads the nation in development with 1,300 MW currently in the permitting process. It is followed by Catalonia, with its recently approved decree-law regulating renewables and battery storage facilities in the region, totaling 975 MW.
Asturias, despite the veiled moratorium announced in 2024, ranks third with 949 MW , followed by Aragon with 832 MW, Castile-La Mancha with 633 MW, Andalusia with 534 MW, the Canary Islands with 508 MW, the Valencian Community with 480 MW, the Balearic Islands with 443 MW, Castile and León with 430 MW, the Basque Country with 170 MW, Navarre with 105 MW, Galicia with 80 MW, the Region of Murcia with 40 MW, and Cantabria with 30 MW. At the provincial level, Asturias stands out as the leading territory for stand-alone installations, with 951 MW, and Cáceres as the most significant province for hybridization, with 834 MW.
From a business perspective, Iberdrola leads the ranking with 903 MW in the pipeline, followed by Enel Green Power with 580 MW, and Grenergy with 345 MW. Next are Matrix Renewables with 305 MW; Forestalia with 303 MW; Rolwind with 279 MW; Arena Green Power with 262 MW; Genia Bioenergy with 260 MW; the US-based CEP Renewables with 223 MW; Naturgy with 189 MW; RIC Energy with 173 MW; and Benbros with 171 MW.
