Spanish grid sees surge of 740 MW in new battery storage applications for 2026
Since the start of the year, the Official State Gazette (BOE) has logged more than 740 MW in applications for administrative and construction permits for battery energy storage systems (BESS). The vast majority of these proposals are for co-location projects attached to existing operational photovoltaic plants.
Bruc Energy is among the most active players, proposing 158.4 MW in the province of Seville. The company is processing the 39.6 MW Freya BESS, designed to integrate with its 44 MW Freya solar plant in Carmona. In Alcalá de Guadaíra, Bruc is planning three additional systems, Elvisa, Heracles, and GES, each rated at 39.6 MW and linked to their respective solar counterparts.
In the Valencia region, Masdar-owned Saeta Yield is moving forward with nearly 260 MW of capacity. This comprises the Valle Solar I (92.5 MW) and Valle Solar II (167 MW) units, which will hybridize the 300 MW Valle Solar PV plant in Jarafuel and Zarra.
Meanwhile, Sungrow is backing the 55 MW Cuevas project in La Vall d’Uixó (Castellón) and has requested a public utility declaration. In Catalonia, Dargon Energy is developing a 5.5 MW system linked to the Penedès solar farm, while further north in Cantabria, Benbros is processing the 49.7 MW Solórzano project.
In Castilla-La Mancha, Opdenergy is adding over 80 MW of capacity through three modules known as Belinchón 1, 2, and 3. Each 26.7 MW unit is paired with a corresponding 48 MW solar park in Cuenca province.
Iberdrola is also active in Extremadura, seeking to hybridize four PV projects with storage. The Bat Tagus I, II, III, and IV developments, located in Alcántara (Cáceres), are rated at 35 MW each and have already secured favorable environmental impact reports.
Combined, these administrative filings amount to roughly 748.3 MW of new storage capacity under review.
Regional updates Activity is also picking up at the regional level:
- EDPR is advancing the San Lázaro project in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. The 21.95 MW / 72 MWh facility is currently under public consultation.
- Benbros is developing the Lezama project (20 MW / 60 MWh), which received its environmental impact resolution in January.
- In Gran Canaria, Grupo Satocán is planning the La Punta II storage facility (4.5 MW / 7.9 MWh), tied to a hybrid wind-solar site.
- Finally, Solaria has announced the procurement of 516 MWh of storage capacity for eight of its solar sites: El Baldío 2, Tordesillas 3, Valdelosa, Guleve, Draco, Juno 1, Santiz 1, and Pegaso. The permitting status of these specific installations remains unconfirmed.
According to the latest data from grid operator Red Eléctrica, the total installed battery storage capacity in the Spanish electricity system currently stands at 124.5 MW.
