Invinity supplies large-scale vanadium flow storage for Flexbase project in Switzerland

The Flexbase Group is currently building a large data center for artificial intelligence in Laufenburg, along with a flow battery with a capacity of 800 MW and 1600 MWh. This vanadium flow battery will be supplied by the British-Canadian company Invinity.

When Flexbase began work on its new technology center in Laufenburg in May, CMO Raphael Schmid declined to reveal who would supply the planned 800 MW, 1600 MWh battery storage system. 

On Friday, the Swiss company announced that Invinity Energy Systems had become its strategic partner for the flow battery. The British-Canadian company prevailed against strong international competition with the best technological solution and the most compelling overall package, offering low life-cycle costs (LCOS).

“Invinity’s vanadium flow technology is perfectly suited to our project due to its safety, particularly its non-flammability, its cycle stability, and its flexibility in application,” said Flexbase founder and CEO Marcel Aumer.

According to Flexbase, this paves the way for an energy storage solution that will set new standards in terms of safety, sustainability, and efficiency. Invinity recently delivered the largest vanadium flow battery in the United Kingdom. “Now the company is entering the engineering phase of a project that will become the world’s largest vanadium flow battery,” said Invinity CEO Jonathan Marren. “Our previous focus on building expertise in flow battery technology has been recognized by the award of this contract phase.”

Invinity also adheres to Flexbase’s Swissness philosophy and relies, among other things, on strong local Swiss partners such as Equans Switzerland AG and Georg Fischer AG.

During the engineering phase, the companies will work out the detailed integration of the storage system, focusing on the precise coordination of the control software and the electrical connection to the existing grid. Following this, the production of the optimized battery modules will be commissioned to ensure timely commissioning.

In May, Flexbase announced that commissioning is scheduled for summer 2028.
