Aypa Power brings 250 MW/1,000 MWh Pediment battery storage online in Arizona

Blackstone-backed developer Aypa Power has commissioned the 250 MW/1,000 MWh Pediment battery energy storage system (BESS) in Mesa, Arizona, under contract with utility Salt River Project.

Salt River Project (SRP) and Aypa Power said that Pediment is now online and serving customers at the Elliot Road Technology Corridor in Mesa, Arizona.

“The addition of new battery energy storage resources provides SRP with flexibility and capacity that helps us reliably serve our customers,” said Bobby Olsen, SRP associate general manager and chief power system executive. “This project is an important addition to SRP’s energy portfolio and supports SRP’s commitment to providing reliable, affordable and sustainable power as the Valley continues to experience record growth.”

Moe Hajabed, chief executive officer of Aypa Power, said the project reflects the company’s approach to delivering power infrastructure in high-growth markets, and that its Arizona projects are positioned to support rising demand from large-load customers while strengthening grid reliability.

Pediment is the first of two Aypa Power projects under contract with SRP. A second 250 MW/2,000 MWh lithium-ion BESS is expected to come online in December 2028, bringing the two projects’ combined capacity on SRP’s system to 500 MW and 3,000 MWh. Aypa Power acquired Pediment from developer Eolian in 2024.

SRP says it now has more than 1,570 MW of battery storage supporting its grid, alongside more than 1,560 MW of solar capacity. The utility is targeting an 82% reduction in carbon intensity from 2005 levels by 2035 and net zero carbon emissions by 2050.
