Spain adds 1.76 GW of battery storage projects in Q2

Spain added 34 battery energy storage projects totaling 1.76 GW in the second quarter of 2026, as developers including Bruc Energy, Enel Green Power, and Iberdrola advanced hybrid and standalone storage projects.

Spain recorded 34 new battery energy storage projects totaling 1.76 GW in the second quarter of 2026, compared with 16 projects totaling 733 MW in the same period a year earlier. The number of projects increased 112% year on year, while total capacity rose 140%.

The projects include a mix of standalone battery systems and hybrid installations paired with existing solar and wind assets. Among the largest portfolios were projects promoted by Bruc Energy, Enel Green Power, Solaria, and other renewable developers.

Bruc Energy accounted for 240 MW of battery storage projects during the quarter, including hybrid systems in Andalusia. Enel Green Power advanced 143 MW of storage projects, while Solaria submitted 80 MW of battery projects linked to solar plants.

Other developers advancing projects included Zelestra, Aquila Clean Energy, Ignis, Matrix Renewables, RIC Energy, X-Elio, EDP Renewables, Statkraft, Grenergy, Iberdrola, Elawan Energy, and FRV.

The largest individual projects included RIC Energy’s 176.44 MW Tagus 2 battery system in Toledo, Zelestra’s 109.2 MW SPK Trujillo storage project in Cáceres, Matrix Renewables’ 101.8 MW BESS Lagerung project in Girona, and X-Elio’s 105 MW BESS Pacheco project in Murcia.

Most projects are designed to hybridize existing renewable plants, allowing solar and wind generation to be shifted toward periods of higher demand and improving grid flexibility.

The increase in project filings reflects Spain’s accelerating battery storage deployment as developers seek to integrate more renewable generation and address grid balancing needs.
