Prosolia, Grenergy advance battery storage projects in Portugal and Spain
Prosolia Energy has started operation of a battery energy storage system at its Albispark PV plant in Castelo Branco, central-eastern Portugal.
The project combines a 34.4 MWp solar installation with a 15 MW battery system offering 60 MWh of storage capacity, connected directly to the 150 kV transmission grid. According to Prosolia, it is one of the largest operational hybrid solar and storage facilities in Portugal.
The battery system was supplied by Trina Storage and includes monitoring and energy management systems designed to optimize the combined operation of the solar plant and storage facility, according to Prosolia.
The project was selected under Portugal’s Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR), through the C21-REPowerEU program, which aims to increase grid flexibility and support greater renewable energy integration.
Prosolia said Albispark is its first international large-scale hybridization project with storage and marks the beginning of a strategy to add BESS systems to its European renewable energy portfolio.
The company plans to replicate the model in other European markets, including Italy.
Separately, Grenergy has secured a €100 million senior non-recourse financing package, including credit facilities, for its Oviedo standalone battery storage project in Spain.
The financing was provided by Banco Santander and Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (SMBC) and represents, according to Grenergy, the first financing of this type for an independent BESS project in Spain.
The project reached another milestone in February with the signing of Spain’s first financial tolling agreement for a standalone storage system. The 10-year agreement, beginning in 2028, was signed with an international investment-grade energy company.
Construction has already started on industrial land next to the La Estrecha electrical substation in La Corredoria, Oviedo, allowing direct connection to the electricity grid.
Grenergy expects the facility to begin operations in the first half of 2027. The project forms part of the company’s Greenbox standalone storage platform, which currently includes nearly 30 GWh of projects across six European markets.
