Sungrow leads first global BESS integrator ranking as market tops 100 GW

Wood Mackenzie has ranked Sungrow as the world’s leading battery energy storage system (BESS) integrator in its first global assessment, as annual installations surpassed 100 GW for the first time.

Wood Mackenzie has published its first global ranking of BESS integrators, placing Sungrow first ahead of Tesla and CATL as annual global battery storage installations exceeded 100 GW for the first time in 2025.

The ranking focuses on factory-assembled AC-integrated BESS solutions that combine batteries, power conversion systems (PCS), battery management systems (BMS), thermal management, and control systems into a single AC-connected product.

Wood Mackenzie said the ranking reflects how utilities, independent power producers (IPPs), and developers evaluate BESS integrators during procurement. The assessment covers 10 criteria, including technology maturity, research and development investment, safety, vertical integration, supply chain resilience, environmental, social and governance (ESG) performance, and financial strength.

Sungrow ranked first in the inaugural 2026 edition, followed by Tesla and CATL. BYD placed fourth, while Envision and Trina Storage shared fifth place. Fluence, LG, Canadian Solar, and Wärtsilä completed the top 10.

The consultancy said experience and execution capability were key differentiators, noting that six of the top 10 companies have more than a decade of experience integrating BESS projects. It said this reflects the growing importance of system design, commissioning expertise, and long-term operational performance as projects become larger and more complex.

Vertical integration also emerged as a common feature among the leading suppliers. All top 10 companies manufacture at least one critical system component – battery cells, PCS, or BMS – for their own projects, helping improve product compatibility, quality control, and project execution.

Wood Mackenzie also highlighted technology leadership and financial strength. Eight of the top 10 companies met its benchmark for system efficiency and lifetime performance, while nine invested more than 4% of annual revenue in research and development during 2025. Nine also reported positive profitability, supporting their ability to back long-term warranties and service agreements.

The report awarded 24 manufacturers a Grade A rating, reflecting what Wood Mackenzie described as the growing maturity of the global battery storage industry and the increasing number of suppliers capable of meeting demanding performance requirements.

It added that leading suppliers continue to expand manufacturing capacity internationally in response to changing trade policies and local-content requirements while maintaining international safety certifications and advanced thermal management systems.

Wood Mackenzie said the next phase of competition will depend less on manufacturing scale and more on the ability to consistently deliver projects across international markets.
