Alpiq acquires 90% stake in UK battery storage developer

Swiss energy company Alpiq has agreed to acquire a 90% stake in Harmony Energy, a UK developer and operator of battery energy storage systems (BESS), as it seeks to expand its battery storage business across European markets.

Alpiq said the acquisition adds Harmony Energy’s development platform and multi-gigawatt battery storage project pipeline to its portfolio, strengthening its position across the BESS value chain, from project development and construction to operation.

The companies already have an established commercial relationship. Alpiq previously acquired two BESS projects from Harmony Energy, including the 100 MW Cheviré project in France.

The transaction also adds about 400 MW of battery storage projects currently under construction to Alpiq’s existing European BESS portfolio. The companies said one UK project is expected to be connected to the grid in the third quarter of 2026.

Harmony Energy will continue to sell selected projects or developments to third-party investors, in line with its existing business model, the companies said.

Following completion of the transaction, Harmony Energy will continue to operate independently under its existing brand. Co-founder Peter Kavanagh will remain chief executive officer and retain a 10% stake in the business. Christoph Bellin, Alpiq’s head of BESS, will join Harmony Energy’s executive management team while retaining his role at Alpiq.

The companies did not disclose the financial terms of the transaction.
