RWE starts installing 236 MW/470 MWh battery storage project in Germany

RWE has begun buidling a 236 MW/470 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) at a mine in western Germany. The project is scheduled to enter service in 2027 and will provide ancillary services including frequency regulation, with future capability to deliver synthetic inertia.

RWE has begun installing a utility-scale BESS at its Hambach lignite mine in Germany’s Rhineland region as the company continues repurposing the site ahead of the planned phaseout of coal mining.

The project, located near the municipality of Niederzier, North Rhine-Westphalia, will have an output of 236 MW and an energy storage capacity of 470 MWh. Construction is underway, with RWE set to install 128 lithium-ion battery containers. The first containers have now been delivered following site preparation that began in late 2025.

RWE expects the battery storage system to enter commercial operation in 2027.

The company said the system will provide ancillary services, including frequency regulation. It has also been designed to deliver additional grid-support services in the future, including synthetic inertia.

RWE is currently developing around 1.7 GW of battery storage capacity across Germany.

At the Hambach mine, RWE has already commissioned three solar parks with a combined capacity of about 50 MW, along with a 4.1 MW / 8.1 MWh battery energy storage system. The company is also building a nearby 14.8 MW solar park and an additional battery storage project with an energy capacity of 80 MWh.
