Mecpower Solutions plans 5 GWh battery assembly factory in India

India’s Mecpower Solutions has agreed to set up a 5 GWh battery energy storage system (BESS) assembly facility in western India, targeting utility-scale and commercial and industrial (C&I) markets.

Mecpower Solutions Ltd, an Indian integrated renewable energy infrastructure company, has signed a deal with the state government of Gujarat to set up a 5 GWh BESS assembly facility at Karjan, with an envisaged investment of around INR 1.6 billion ($16.714.096).

As India advances toward its clean energy and energy security goals, energy storage systems are expected to play a pivotal role in enabling the large-scale deployment of renewable energy while addressing the challenges of intermittency and grid stability.

The proposed facility will cater to the utility-scale and commercial and industrial applications.

Setul Shah, managing director of Mecpower Solutions, said the agreement marks a key milestone in the company’s strategy to expand its energy infrastructure business. He said the planned 5 GWh BESS assembly facility underscores Mecpower’s confidence in India’s clean energy market and its commitment to expanding domestic battery manufacturing.
