UGL bags EPC job on APA’s Sybella solar and 104 MWh battery project in Australia

Engineering group UGL has been awarded the engineering design, procurement, construction and commissioning role for the upcoming Sybella solar and BESS project in Australia.

The project is developed by APA Group, which has specialized to a degree in renewables projects in far-flung locations, and supplying both towns and mining sites. The Sybella project is a second project of its own for the mining town of Mount Isa in Queensland, in a remote area in Australia. Its first was the Dugald River solar farm, an 88 MW installation completed in 2024.

APA said at final investment time for Sybella that it would will invest “about $259 million” (USD 185 million) into the project, which is underpinned by a long-term Energy Supply Agreement with Evolution Mining until mid-2046. APA Group is primarily a gas giant, owning more than 15,000 kilometres of gas pipelines.

Construction of Sybella by UGL is anticipated to commence in late 2026, with completion expected in mid-2028. It will be UGL’s 16th solar farm and 12th BESS project.
