Covenergo and Delta Capacity break ground on 125 MW / 300 MWh Finnish big battery

Construction has started on a 125 MW / 300 MWh standalone battery energy storage system (BESS) in Lapinlahti, central Finland. The project is said to be a partnership between European renewable infrastructure developer Covenergo and Swiss storage developer-operator Delta Capacity, with Covenergo the majority owner, and commissioning is slated for the fourth quarter of 2027.

Delta Capacity acquired AKKU One as a ready-to-build asset from Helios Nordic Energy. Covenergo will retain majority ownership of the installation, with Delta Capacity acting as the engineering, procurement, and construction management (EPCM) contractor and leading route-to-market commercial optimization and asset management.

The 2.4-hour duration system will utilize equipment supplied by Chinese storage manufacturer Sungrow, drawn from a 1 GWh framework procurement contract Delta Capacity signed with the company earlier this year (Sungrow supplies Delta Capacity 1 GWh framework, in German).

In terms of boots on the ground, Finnish balance-of-plant contractor NYAB is handling on-site civil and electrical works, Nordic engineering group Rejlers is serving as technical consultant, and Vaasa-based engineering firm Ampner is managing grid compliance studies and Fingrid interconnection requirements. Software and SCADA integration will be delivered by DNV subsidiary GreenPowerMonitor.

The project will become Delta Capacity’s second battery storage facility in Finland, while it also completed the 70 MW / 160 MWh Ånge BESS in Sweden earlier this year, as the north of Europe and Nordics are increasingly seeing battery penetration.

The Nordic asset having a 2.4-hour duration reflects how the Nord Pool zone is no longer fit for 1-hour duration projects that once targeted fast frequency containment reserves (FCR-D and FFR) which are no longer relied upon as extensively.
