Innovative energy storage auction and renewables-friendly policy put Italy front and center
London-based investor Bluefield says Italy's cautious, 'stop-start' approach to clean energy and energy storage procurement is less catastrophic than Spain's boom-bust experience and says it could bid for around 100 MW of battery energy storage systems (BESS) in the MACSE energy storage auction.

Sembcorp, HG Infra secure 900 MWh of tendered Indian battery capacity
Sembcorp has been awarded a 150 MW solar project and 300 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) in a solar-plus-storage tender held by utility Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam Ltd (SJVN), and H.G. The rise of bankable BESS projects in Europe
As the renewable energy sector rapidly evolves, battery energy storage systems (BESS) are emerging as a critical pillar for decarbonization. However, with capital constraints and rising market volatility, not all projects are equally viable. At ABO Energy, we're witnessing a shift in the investment landscape, where preparedness is the key to success.

Brazilian capacity reserve auction suspension makes batteries even more urgent
With the Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME) revoking ordinances for a thermal and hydro tender planned for June, the need for a touted battery-specific exercise, in the second half of the year, has become even more urgent, according to PV body Absolar.

Greece awards 189 MW of battery storage in third auction
Greece’s latest auction has awarded subsidies to 188.9 MW of standalone, front-of-the-meter, utility-scale battery energy storage. The auction was the third and final edition of a battery storage subsidy program launched in 2023, with the country now turning its focus towards a new 4.7 GW unsibsidized BESS scheme.

China scraps energy storage mandate for renewable energy plants
In a major policy shift towards electricity market liberalization, China has introduced contract for difference (CfD) auctions for renewable energy plants and removed the energy storage mandate, which has driven up to 75% of the nation's demand to date. S&P Global expects the move to reverberate throughout the global battery energy storage supply chain, further driving down prices that are already at historically low levels.

Philippines issues terms for renewables auction with storage
Pairing solar plants with battery energy storage systems (BESS) will be the main strategic focus for the country's upcoming renewable energy auction. Each project must have a minimum storage duration of four hours to ensure sufficient grid support and energy reliability.

UK T-4 auction paves the way to nearly 7 GW of new BESS capacity by 2028
Out of the 6.9 GW of battery energy storage systems (BESS) prequalified, which translates into 1.9 GW derated capacity, around 1.8 GW of derated BESS secured 15-year contracts in the UK's T-4 auction. This is nearly two time more than the volume procured last year. Only a week earlier, a record for BESS procurement was also set in the T-1 procurement.

UK regulator reveals criteria of LDES cap-and-floor scheme
Long duration energy storage (LDES) support scheme will have eight-hour minimum discharge. Stream 1 applications will open to well-established technologies, such as lithium-ion battery technology, with at least 100 MW capacity, with stream 2 technologies including flow batteries, compressed air, and liquid air.
