Spain publishes new network access rules, redefining connection of demand and storage
The National Commission of Markets and Competition (CNMC) will set access capacity, short-circuit limits, and monthly maps from February 2026. Meanwhile, the Ministry for the Ecological Transition (MITECO) has published guidance on calculating installed capacity for administrative authorizations, addressing both standalone and hybrid battery energy storage systems under the new Royal Decree 997/2025.
“More than 1.7 TW of renewable and hybrid projects ‘stuck’ in grid connection queues across Europe”
The Energy Storage Europe Association recommends a reform of connection procedures, the establishment of priority lanes for storage and other grid-forming projects, appropriately designed flexible connection agreements (FCAs), and the introduction of hosting capacity maps from grid operators to guide investment and improve system planning.
Colombia advances policy for 5 MW+ grid-connected and off-grid energy storage
A new regulatory proposal from the Colombian government outlines the technical and commercial rules for energy storage assets. The framework targets both the national grid and remote microgrids to handle increasing climatic variability.
Great Britain axes 153 GW of zombie projects to clear the queue for shovel-ready BESS
Grid connection overhaul removes 153 GW of battery energy storage projects from connection queue as National Energy System Operator (NESO) implements new process prioritizing ready-to-build projects. NESO’s reform followed a tenfold increase in the connections queue over a five-year period.

Catalonian law incentivizes batteries, renewables; simplifies permitting
The legislative decree introduces urgent regulatory measures for battery energy storage systems (BESS) with a capacity exceeding 500 kW and designates renewable energy sites, their grid connection lines, and energy storage facilities to be of overriding public interest.
Innovative energy storage auction and renewables-friendly policy put Italy front and center
London-based investor Bluefield says Italy's cautious, 'stop-start' approach to clean energy and energy storage procurement is less catastrophic than Spain's boom-bust experience and says it could bid for around 100 MW of battery energy storage systems (BESS) in the MACSE energy storage auction.
Hithium, LG begin US battery manufacture in tough American market
As news emerges of the financial travails of American energy storage companies Powin and ESS, Inc., Chinese manufacturer Hithium has officially opened a near-$200 million factory in Texas and Korean brand LG has confirmed the start of lithium iron-phosphate (LFP) battery production in Michigan.

IEEFA: Solar revolution now extends to batteries in Pakistan, with rapid ROI
Falling solar and battery costs – and rising grid electricity prices – are driving a boom in small-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS). Yet, this could mean trouble in a country which is already sitting on 'stranded' liquefied natural gas (LNG) power plants.
Home battery incentives could see 100,000 systems installed in Western Australia
A plan to permit incentives from federal and state battery schemes to be cumulative has been abandoned but the government of Western Australia (WA) says dovetailing the two programs will mean more households can benefit.
