India’s NTPC Green Energy wins 320 MWh of battery projects
The renewables division of India’s National Thermal Power Company (NTPC), and Opera Energy, were winners in a tender held by the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) for standalone battery energy storage systems (BESS) in the state of Kerala.

NTPC Green Energy Ltd (NGEL) secured 80 MW/320 MWh of BESS projects in NHPC’s auction for grid-connected, standalone batteries in Kerala.
NGEL won two key projects:
- 40 MW/160 MWh at Pothencode substation with a quoted tariff of INR 457,000 ($5,321)/MW/month
- 40 MW/160 MWh at Sreekantapuram substation with a tariff of INR 434,000/MW/month
Meanwhile, Opera Energy secured 15 MW/60 MWh at a tariff of INR 438,000/MW/month.

The role of battery energy storage systems in sustainable data centers
While many data centres have started using solar power as part of their energy sources, they still depend on grid energy because of regulatory issues like discom regulations and banking policies. To enhance the use of green energy and lessen reliance on fossil-fuel-based grid electricity, combining battery energy storage systems (BESS) with hybrid solar and wind power systems is a practical solution.

Falling li-ion battery prices mirror solar photovoltaics trends: Is there a role for second-life batteries before recycling?
Lithium-ion batteries are everywhere, powering everything from consumer electronics to electric vehicles, residential PV storage systems, and, more recently, mitigating curtailment in large-scale wind and solar power plants. EVs are driving large-scale demand for Li-ion batteries which will result in substantial volumes of spent batteries in the near future. This scenario highlights the potential for repurposing EV batteries for second-life stationary applications, which could maximise their value before recycling. However, to fully realise this opportunity, several economic, technical, and regulatory challenges must be addressed and resolved.
