AMEA Power completes 300 MWh battery storage project in Egypt
AMEA Power has successfully commissioned Egypt’s first-ever utility-scale BESS, a 300 MWh facility located in the Aswan Governorate, south of Cairo, along the NIle. The project was delivered ahead of its scheduled commercial operation date and follows the project’s recent financial close.
The battery storage system extends the company’s 500 MW solar PV plant, which has been operational since December 2024. Together, the co-located system represents the largest operational solar-plus-storage site in Egypt.
The project aligns with Egypt’s Integrated Sustainable Energy Strategy 2035, which outlines the country’s long-term energy transition goals.
“We are proud to bring this landmark battery storage project online, strengthening the resilience of Egypt’s electricity grid while supporting the country’s renewable energy ambitions,” said Hussain Al Nowais, chairman of AMEA Power. “This commissioning milestone reaffirms our long-term commitment to Egypt as a key partner in driving innovation and sustainability across Africa.”
The system is fully powered by solar PV and is designed to enhance energy security and grid stability in the region. According to the company, the commissioning marks its first utility-scale storage deployment in North Africa.
The International Finance Corporation (IFC) provided financing for the project. AMEA Power highlighted the role of strategic partnerships in accelerating renewable energy infrastructure in Africa.
