Indian state of Rajasthan again tendering up to 2 GWh of battery storage capacity
State utility Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Ltd (RRVUN) has invited bids to set up standalone battery energy storage systems (BESS), connected to the State Transmission Utility (STU), with an aggregate storage capacity of 2,000 MWh (500 MW x 4 hours). The systems will operate on a single-cycle charging/discharging basis.
The utility company seeks to utilize these energy storage systems on an “on-demand” basis to meet the state’s requirements during peak and off-peak hours.
The Rajasthan utility or RRVUN will enter into a battery energy storage purchase agreement (or BESPA) with the selected bidders for providing energy storage services. The selected BESS developers will be responsible for setting up the systems on a build-own-operate basis with a 12-year contract.
Projects awarded under this Request for Selection will be eligible for central financial assistance in the form of viability gap funding through the Power System Development Fund scheme, issued by the Ministry of Power.
The utility previously aimed for 2 GWh of storage via a tender in late 2024. The announced results of that tender were in June, with Solarworld Energy Solutions won 125 MW/250 MWh at a tariff of ₹221,000 ($2,561)/MW/month, while Oriana Power won 50 MW/100 MWh at ₹222,000 ($2,574)/MW/month. Rays Power Experts won 75 MW/150 MWh at ₹223,000 ($2,586)/MW/month, and JSW Neo Energy grabbed 250 MW/500 MWh at ₹224,000 ($2,597)/MW/month.
