Eni starts building 16 GWh battery factory hub in Italy

Eni has begun construction of a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery manufacturing complex that will produce cells, modules, and stationary battery energy storage systems (BESS), with total annual production capacity targeted at 16 GWh by 2030.

Eni Storage Systems, a joint venture between Eni Industrial Evolution and FIB (Seri Industrial Group), has started construction of a new lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery manufacturing hub in Brindisi, southern Italy.

The project will primarily produce batteries for stationary BESS. Together with a second facility in Teverola, near Caserta, the company aims to reach a combined annual production capacity of 16 GWh by 2030, split equally between the two sites.

The Brindisi facility will manufacture battery cells and modules and assemble battery packs, including modules produced at Seri Industrial’s Teverola gigafactory.

In a second development phase, the site will also produce LFP cathode active material and recycle batteries, with both operations sized to serve the two gigafactories.

Eni said the investment marks its entry into the battery manufacturing sector, while also announcing it has acquired a stake in Faenix, the Seri Industrial Group company that will market battery energy storage systems produced at the Teverola and Brindisi facilities.
