Long-duration battery storage can contribute to security of supply more cost-effectively than gas-fired power plants, LCP Delta finds
LCP Delta has conducted a study analyzing the potential contribution of long-duration battery storage to security of supply within capacity tenders in Germany, including an economic comparison with gas-fired power plants and the resulting costs to the public. However, the authors explicitly note that they are not advocating for a complete phase-out of new gas-fired power plants.

Following the contracting of 19 GW in the first LRCAP auction held this Friday (March 20), an additional 501 MW from existing thermal power plants was secured. In total, consultancy Thymos Energia had identified a need for 23 GW across the auctions, leaving an estimated remaining demand of around 3 GW for the battery auction.

Brazilian energy storage regulation due this year, regulator official says
Daniel Danna, rapporteur for regulator the Agência Nacional de Energia Elétrica's (ANEEL) Public Consultation (CP) 39, of 2023, told Brazil's Chamber of Deputies initial energy storage rules would be published in the second half of the year, with two rounds of further regulatory discussion due to finish by 2028.

Brazilian energy storage hampered by technical challenges and lack of regulation
While Brazil wastes billions of real on curtailment, the electricity sector is demanding urgent action on an energy storage capacity reserve auction which is now not expected until 2026. 'What is missing is the courage to unlock the market,' said Greener CEO Marcio Takata.
