Tesvolt presents large-scale battery storage with “cyber-secure” control

Tesvolt, described by the company as a “provider of battery storage systems, project developer and electricity marketer,” is showing its large-scale battery Tallon at the energy trade fair E-World (10 to 12 February in Essen).

As with most providers, this system with 2.5 MW / 5 MW of capacity also uses cells from Asia. However, the company, based in Wittenberg, places emphasis on the fact that it has integrated its own battery control system, “which provides significantly higher security against cyberattacks” – according to CTO and co-founder Simon Schandert.

Examples of the high cyber security, Tesvolt says, include that all internet data connections of the battery park controller Tesvolt Energy Controller EZA pro L run entirely through specific VPN tunnels. In addition, outgoing data connections are designed only one way. Special hardware protects the plant controller from direct access from the internet.

Against the backdrop of recently publicized considerations to exclude Chinese inverters from the European market, Tesvolt also points out that it has “seen the concrete threat from inverters of some manufacturers for a long time”; therefore the company’s storage systems are compatible with European brands, for example the Tallon with SMA or Power Electronics.

Tesvolt recommends its battery storage system, placed in a 20-foot steel container and based on LFP (lithium-iron phosphate) cells, for standalone storage projects, hybrid power plants and applications in commercial and industrial sectors (C&I).

As a special feature, the company offers a one-stop model for municipal utilities: “What no one else in the energy storage market has offered so far: we not only put the battery container in place, but accompany municipal utilities on the entire path to an economical battery park, including operation,” explains Sebastian Jänig, head of the Tesvolt large-scale storage projects division.

The offering includes project planning, installation, operation, monitoring and electricity marketing. For the latter, the subsidiary Tesvolt Energy can take over marketing on various energy markets, cooperating with traders Enspired, Entrix and The Mobility House.

The Tallon follows a modular concept that is intended to make later expansion of projects easier. Optional one, two or more DC outputs per container are available to distribute the battery storage across several inverters and better match storage capacity to the desired power. According to Tesvolt, the fire protection system permits installation of the storage with 10 centimetre spacing. The warranty period for the Tallon is 15 years.
